Universally, we have found that alcohol and addiction issues impact
both the user and those who care about the user. The root cause
of most abuse (whether physical or sexual) is alcohol or drug related,
as is the root cause of many other injuries. According to
statistics:
• Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.
• One in six American women are victims of sexual assault, and one in 33 men.
• In 2004-2005, there were an average annual 200,780 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.
• About 44% of rape victims are under age 18, and 80% are under age 30.
• Offender pre-assault alcohol use is thought to cause more risky
assault characteristics (e.g., stranger assaults and weapons) and more
severe assault outcomes (e.g., completed rapes and physical injury).
• Offender alcohol use was associated with stranger assaults, night assaults, outdoor locations, and greater victim resistance.
• Sweeping studies in both the United States and the United Kingdom
link alcohol and drug abuse to sexual abuse, incest, and violence.
• Sexually abused individuals are prone to post-traumatic stress
syndrome, severe depression, self-mutilation (cutting), a feeling of
worthlessness, eating disorders.
